Last week, we showed up unannounced at Voodoo Vinyl, DJ Smartypants’ Monday night party at the Mix (2423 N St. Mary’s).
CDs or vinyl? Vinyl ? till they’re too scratched to play.
Where/how do you buy music? Thrift stores, garage sales, anywhere it’s sold for $1.
Favorite track right this second? “Can’t Stop Now (Love Is Calling)” by Tammi Terrell, from 1968. It may be the greatest Motown track ever.
What would you play to get people to leave a party? Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music (1975). It’s a two-LP set, and it’s nothing but static noise.
What do you do when you’re not spinning? Hunt for cheap vinyl, vintage guitars, and old biker jackets; front the band the Mechanical Walking Robotboy `next gig: 10 p.m. Wed, Nov 24 at the Limelight with De Los Muertos and Los Mescaleros`.
Type of music you least like to play? Norwegian black metal. It’s all about burning down churches and eating each other’s brains. That and modern country ? there’s not much difference.
If you could DJ anywhere in SA, where would you play? The Tower of the Americas or the roof of the Alamo. The Tower really should be the most happening club in the world.
How long have you been spinning at the Mix? A little over a year. But Voodoo Vinyl’s been happening for two years `the party was previously held at Web House`.

How would you describe the genre of music you listen to most? Weird and groovy. There’s so much great music out there if you’re willing to dig. When I’m spinning and somebody comes up to ask, “Hey what song was that?” I know I’ve done my job.
