UTSA brings European cinema to Bijou

From adulterous affairs to smoking bans to eccentric women, the best of modern European cinema is the focus of a film festival sponsored by the University of Texas at San Antonio.

The series, which includes two panel discussions, runs from March 22-24 at the Bijou Theatre.

Mexico en Corto continues at Instituto

The Insituto de México's series of short international films continues through the end of March.

Cita en El Paraíso, La Historia de I y O, Ponchada, Lávelo y Úselo, and Objetos Perdidos will be shown in Spanish, followed by El Beso, an 86-minute film by French director Claude Lelouch.

Trinity explores Caesar's assassination

Ancient Rome meets the future in Trinity University alumnus Heath Hamrick's second film, IDES, which chronicles the conspiratorial events leading to Julius Caesar's assassination.

Set in a futuristic world, Hamrick resurrects infamous people of ancient Rome to comment on the present and future political systems. Hamrick filmed IDES at the Trinity campus and features an all-student cast and crew. Due to violence and sexual content, the film is not suitable for children.

Call for entries

The San Antonio Underground Film Festival is currently accepting short and feature films of all genres for its upcoming 10th annual event. The festival is scheduled for June 25 through 27 at Sunset Station. Submission deadline is April 23; the entry fee is $25. Deadline for late entries is April 30; the entry fee is $35. Previews must be formatted on DVD or NTSC-VHS; foreign language films must be subtitled.

Anyone who enters will receive a festival T-shirt. The grand prize winner will receive a lowrider bicycle or $200 cash. Entry forms can be downloaded from the festival's website: www.safilm.com.
