Mitchell Binder, designer and owner of King Baby Studio visits Neiman Marcus La Cantera Saturday

by

Mitchell Binder, designer and owner of King Baby Studio will be at Neiman Marcus La Cantera on Saturday, September 10th from 11:00 am until 4:00 pm, showcasing his new products and meeting with clients. I spoke with the Santa Monica-based designer yesterday, who couldn’t wait to talk about what to expect, “I’m really excited! We’re bringing a lot of new items with rubies and sapphires, beaded bracelets, rosaries that are going to be really hot, and a few other surprises that I’ll preview at the store.”

The name of the company, King Baby Studio, refers to a name coined by Sigmund Freud, and refers to a mental condition where patients believe the world revolves around them. “That’s why I named my company that,” Binder declares with a charismatic laugh, “Many of my customers feel that way,” A man’s man and an avid biker, Binder also describes his company as, “half rock & roll and half outlaw biker.” However, while designing exclusively for men for years, Binder finally fulfilled the demand for women’s wear. In 2007, King Baby Studio officially launched Queen Baby for women, with extraordinary success.

“The line is going through a major evolution,” Binder remarks, “We’re right in the middle of designing for Spring 2012 which is going to be a combination of chandelier earrings with my Steampunk style.” The Steampunk style is reminiscent of the 1800s and the industrial age, when technology was mechanical and required many moving parts, like steam locomotives. Binder refers to this style even while constructing his women’s chandelier earrings, as well as men’s clothing, “We do weather wear, jackets, scarves and hoodies. These are all in vintage leathers and have a very, very American theme. In fact, I am using vintage American flags and sewing them together, and distressing them to use in the lining and some accents.” Many of Binder’s new and old pieces are heavy stressed and, according to Binder, “most people comment about the weight of the pieces because they are very heavy and bold, yet you can wear multiples for layering.”

What to expect to see at Neiman Marcus stores? On Saturday Binder will bring some of his stone mason work which represents more of that vintage feel, and, of course, some surprises. Hope to see you on Saturday!
