What Easy Lee (Mojoe) and Marco Cervantes (Mexican Stepgrandfather) did with their joint project Third Root (Stand for Something) was much more than a black/brown alliance — it was easily one of the best local albums of 2012. Their new project: a 14-track mixtape in which they put poetry to the beats and scratches of Austin’s jazztronica DJ Chicken George (also TR’s deejay). All guests are top-notch: red-hot Pop Pistol, soulful DJ JJ Lopez, subtle producer Greg G (check The Golden Child mixtape), and lethal Vocab (Andrea Sorensen, who released Sounds So Sweet on December 1, a collaboration with DJ Ninja) combine for a no-nonsense, keep-it-real hip-hop/soul/alt/electropop night for people who like to feel and think. Get the free mixtape on Monday at soundcloud.com/third-root. $5; 9pm Sun, Jan 20; War Room, 2718 N St. Mary's, (210) 735-7775, warroomsa.com.
