Recently named director of the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art in Portugal, Melbourne-born Suzanne Cotter has worked as Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation Curator for the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Project (scheduled to open in 2017). As guest curator at Artpace, Cotter selected the first trio for the institution’s 2013 International Artist-in-Residence cycle. Famous for a sense of humor T magazine described as “morbid, deadpan and frequently gory,” Tehran, Iran’s Tala Madani puts a cartoonish twist on tragedy in her paintings and silent animations. Performance, photography, and sculpture factor into native New Yorker Adam Putnam’s investigations into our relationships with space. Known to incorporate unusual materials into textural works, Austin’s J. Parker Valentine strays from the norm with a new project that uses light to cast “drawings on the gallery wall.” Free, 6-8:30pm Thursday, Artpace, 445 N Main, (210) 212-4900, artpace.org.
