A Midsummer Night's Dream blog image

Penned in the 1590s, Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream has inspired ballets, films, paintings, cartoons, sculptures, even the names of two moons orbiting Uranus. Framed by a royal wedding between the Duke of Athens and the Queen of the Amazons, the comic romp follows young lovers as they flee Athens to pursue romance in an enchanted forest. Complicated by interlocking plots, magical mishaps, and a bizarre love quadrangle, the play can be tricky to follow but enjoyable even if you can’t — thanks to such Shakespearean oddities as a dalliance between Titania, Queen of the Fairies, and Bottom, a “rude mechanical” with an ass on his head. The Magik Theatre brings the fast-moving rom-com to the Botanical Garden as part of its Shakespeare in the Park series. $5 suggested donation, 8pm Wed-Sat, San Antonio Botanical Garden, 555 Funston, (210) 207-3250, sabot.org.
