Maria Haq of Villa Bella Salon has managed to plan Spectrum
, her first hair show — a type of event that others might invest a year’s worth of time to arrange — in a matter of a few months. How did she do it?
The grinning stylist says she just dove right in, “like a child diving into a candy jar.”
Maria’s youthful optimism has undoubtedly opened many doors for her during her work on Spectrum, this weekend's hair styling fashion show. She has been warmly received by San Antonio’s creative community, a community Maria praises for its inclusivity and connectedness. Connection, peace, and inspiration are the themes Maria hopes Spectrum guests will appreciate at her event. Fittingly, the name “Spectrum” itself was chosen to celebrate the idea that all people participating in the show are encouraged to co-create without fear and without competition. “We’re all artists in our own way,” Maria says. Spectrum will celebrate the concept of community over individualism.
Spectrum, which will take place March 14, from 6:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. at Brick
, “is not just about Maria,” the stylist stresses. While Maria has coordinated the event and will feature front-and-center in the hair show’s portion of the night, she wishes to give every performing artist his or her chance to shine. By including such acts as Arte y Pasión’s flamenco dancers, Aerial Horizon’s acrobats, and Calico Club’s electronic beats, Maria has ensured her guests a high-energy, circus-like atmosphere. “I want to bring [the] inner child out of everyone,” she says.
There will be several vendors at the event, most of which will adhere to a natural aesthetic — there will be an organic candlemaker and a vendor selling bags woven from all-natural materials. But here’s where things get really interesting: In addition to the vendors who will attend Spectrum, Maria, who identifies as a spiritualist and intuitive person herself, has invited Rev. Ricardo Gonzales to perform psychic readings. Dr. Joe Huerta, nutritionist and spiritual healer, will also be in attendance to speak about the powers of biodynamic energy cleansers.
Maria’s own show during Spectrum, the product of her nearly 20 years of experience in cosmetology, will be called “Beauty without Boundaries.” It will feature 12 hand-picked models, all of different ages, different looks, and different body types. They will sport Maria’s edgiest cuts and colors and will wear clothing styled by Agosto Cuellar. Every model in the show will walk twice — once while wearing daywear and once dressed for a night out. The goal of the show is to illustrate the versatility of a dramatic hairstyle. To those women who think they’re too conservative to go bold, Maria says, “Yes, you can. It’s just hair!”
As a creative, Maria Haq wishes to use Spectrum to eliminate fear by creating an environment which fosters acceptance and growth. As a spiritualist, she believes it is her duty to help people recognize their own potential.
“You want to discover yourself?,” Maria asks. “Just dive in.”
