Unveiled in September and set to inspire creative participation through November 8, the exhibition “Narrative Axis” marks a first-time collaboration between local pioneer Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum and New York City’s The Drawing Center — a renowned institution that celebrates drawing as “primary, dynamic, and relevant to contemporary culture, the future of art, and creative thought.”

Inspired by a two-year program that encourages artists to “find new approaches for contextualizing and exhibiting their work,” the group show brings together eight of The Drawing Center’s selected artists, including SA’s own Joey Fauerso, who heads the drawing program at Texas State University and is cited as a “major force behind this collaboration.”

In addition to a pop-up Drawing Lab stocked with unusual art supplies, “Narrative Axis” is rounded out with an array of artist-led programs, such as a Still Life Drawing Session with Leigh Ann Lester (November 4), a Drink and Draw party with Sarah Fox (November 5) and the second edition of Fauerso’s interactive Drawing Battles this Saturday (October 17). Based on Fauerso’s Drawing Battles videos (documenting 11 collaborative drawings the artist made with friends and family), the hands-on activity invites participants to “duke it out" with a pal, stranger or even Fauerso herself as “pens, paint brushes and lines collide.”
