I am going to cash in all of my alt-weekly vulgarity allowances here and just state that I love the fucking shit out of Whoopi Goldberg! From my first exposure to the dreadlocked renaissance woman in TheLion King (yes, I'm still young as shit, I think), to Ghost, which I was allowed to see after several years of maturation, comedic and otherwise, with a couple of Sister Acts thrown in, I have been smitten with the talents of Ms. Goldberg.
Once at an age wherein I could absorb the themes of oppression, feminism and autonomy intrinsic in The Color Purple – along with a laundry list of other motifs explored in the Alice Walker classic – it earned its place amongst my favorite, most powerful films. I still can only watch it every couple of years due to its depth and the polarity of emotions it forces me to feel. Oh, the feels!
To the point. The outspoken EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony) winner will be performing whatever the fuck she feels like – I'll be damned if she hasn't earned it – at the Majestic Theatre on Friday, June 24 at 8pm. Tickets ($49.50-$125.00) go on sale Friday, February 12 at 10am and can be obtained through Ticketmaster, the theatre box office or 800-745-3000.
Simply put, Whoopi is my Madonna, Ghandi, Chaplin and Mother Theresa (the particularly agnostic, critical Theresa) rolled up into one. She is also one of the first women to break the stigma of female farts! That's huge. I am not even kidding. I love you, Whoopi.
