The Classic Theatre Revives the 1930s-era Screwball Comedy ‘You Can’t Take It With You’

  • Siggi Ragnar
When George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart’s now-iconic play You Can’t Take It With You first premiered on Broadway in 1936, those original show-goers couldn’t have known that the kooky tale of tax evasion, in-law issues, and the happily dysfunctional Vanderhof-Sycamore-Carmichael clan would still resonate with audiences more than 80 years later. The comedy, however, which has enjoyed near-constant runs on and off Broadway and even TV/film adaptations, has proven a timeless piece of singularly American drama-meets. Mark Stringham directs Andy Thornton, Catherine Babbitt and other familiar faces in The Classic Theatre’s production, which runs through the end of the month.
