Tobin Center for the Performing Arts
Whether your fond (albeit probably pleasantly fuzzy) memories of the 1960s compel you or you are simply looking to get to know the music of one of the most powerful voices in the history of American song, A Night with Janis Joplin
is a show to see.
While the hit musical will do little to sate longtime fans looking for new insights into the life of the troubled icon, its presentation of Joplin’s timeless music, her singular, charismatic voice, and her relationship to the blues women who influenced her all make for a worthwhile experience. From a sheer music history standpoint, let alone as an evening of penetrating song, this musical is essential, celebrating the likes of Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Odetta, Nina Simone, Bessie Smith and others as it zeroes in on what made Joplin’s short career so special.
$36.50-$89.50, Wed Jan. 24, 7:30pm, Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, H-E-B Performance Hall, 100 Auditorium Circle, tobincenter.org. Want to keep up with all the happenings in San Antonio? Subscribe to our Weekend Newsletter.
