If you were a Spurs fan back in the '90s and early 2000s – or really, a basketball fan, period – then you probably already know that David Robinson and Shaquille O'Neal
did not like each other.
SB Nation recently released an eight-minute video
detailing the rivalry – and stark contrasts – between the two players in an appropriately-named "Beef History" segment.
The video shows that the beef begins in 1992
, when Shaq (who went to high school in San Antonio) entered the league as the No.1 draft pick with the Orlando Magic. Robinson, still affectionately nicknamed The Admiral, was not a fan. The players of the Western Conference, including Robinson, sought to "bring him down a peg"
during the 1994 All-Star game and pulled out all the stops to outdo Shaq in what is normally a laid-back showcase.
An embarrassed Shaq then wanted to make up for it, saying he would "get them back." Next came petty back-and-forth retaliation, comments and game performances between Robinson and O'Neal (yes, even after The Admiral retired in 2003). Shaq said he was targeted because others were jealous of him
, while Robinson clapped back and said, "I'm sure he deserves all the attention as he thinks he deserves."
In his 2001 book, Shaq said that as a high school player he was a fan of The Admiral. That is, until he said Robinson denied him an autograph, which ended up not being true. Shaq later admitted to making up the story to make him hate Robinson
And those are only the highlights of their beef. Watch the full video below to get all the chisme.
