Although Kawhi Leonard was previously expected to return
to the Spurs lineup for Thursday's game against the New Orleans Pelicans, head coach Gregg Popovich said his star player needs "a little bit more work"
before he returns.
Before the team's matchup against the Orlando Magic Tuesday night, Popovich told reporters that Leonard is "frustrated"
that he can't play yet. According to basketball Bible SLAM Magazine, Leonard's medical team hasn't cleared him
as he's still undergoing rehabilitation for his right quadriceps injury (thanks Zaza Pachulia
For now, Popovich and the Spurs camp are waiting until Leonard is cleared to see when the two-time MVP player will be comfortable to return
. League sources told Yahoo! Sports that the franchise wants to ensure a "healthy return"
and not rush his recovery for the sake of this season's standings.
Leonard's return is highly anticipated seeing that the Spurs are currently ranked ninth in the Western Conference
with a 38-30 record. In other words, the team is far from guaranteed to make the playoffs this year, which could be the first time the Spurs won't make an appearance since legend Tim Duncan was drafted in 1996.
