George and Ira Gershwin’s An American in Paris
is a midcentury classic that remains a cultural touchstone, and its staying power was proven by Christopher Wheeldon’s Tony-winning 2015 adaptation. Shortly after the liberation of France, Lieutenant Jerry Lewis purposefully misses a train that would begin his long trek back to America.
Inspired by the beauty of a mysterious woman he encounters, he decides to remain in Paris and pursue his passion for painting. Parisian citizens and the city alike seek a new beginning in spite of the trauma inflicted upon them during the war, and Jerry finds friendship, artistic inspiration, and most importantly, love as he journeys forward into a new chapter of life. Scored by classics such as “I Got Rhythm” and “S’Wonderful,” the musical, which lands on the Majestic stage courtesy of Broadway in San Antonio, is an excellent opportunity to enjoy a live rendering of a definitive piece of midcentury Americana.
