When 2009’s Fantastic Mr. Fox was first announced, Wes Anderson fans were eager, but cautiously so. Stop-motion animation? A Roald Dahl adaptation? Some worried this might be the beloved director’s tipping point in terms of preciousness. It was not. The film, easily one of Anderson’s finest, is tender, witty, emotionally wrenching and full of levity.

The titular Mr. Fox, a go-for-broke schemer and chicken thief-turned family fox, returns to his wily and mischievous old ways with disastrous consequences for his family and entire animal community. But Mr. Fox (voiced to perfection by George Clooney) harnesses his wild animal mojo and, with the help of a crack team, saves the day. Along the way, such unforgettable characters as Willem Dafoe’s drunk, knife-wielding rat, Meryl Streep’s pragmatic and patient Mrs. Fox and Owen Wilson’s meditating, karate-fighting, whackbat ace Kristofferson, Mr. Fox’s nephew, among others, practically steal the show from the magnetic protagonist.

This screening will be the final entry in Wes Fest, which has been a delight this summer, bringing all the director’s movies to ideal outdoor venues around town.

Free, Tue Aug 7, 8pm, Travis Park, 301 E. Travis St., (210) 212-9373, wesandersonfilmfestival.com.
