The 15th annual Chalk It Up festival, a community event presented by Artpace, in which a swath of downtown is turned into a giant, street-level art gallery of chalk works, goes down this weekend.
The core events of what is a busy and ever-expanding affair are the Team Works competition, wherein more than 50 students compete to create the best chalk mural; the Corporate Competition, which gets local businesses in on the arty action; and the featured artists element, which brings a bevy of local artists and their talents to the streets. Beyond all that, attendees can expect plenty of opportunities to create and engage with creators and creations, live music (provided by KRTU 91.7 Jazz), food trucks and much more.
Multimedia art/activism group Borderland Collective heads up a list of featured artists this year and will offer up an extension of their Artpace exhibition “One to Another.” Other SA-based artists to look for include Jose Balli, Sara Barcus, Lucas Dooley, Raul Gonzalez, Justin Parr, Katie Pell, Jeremiah Teutsch and Nancy Wood. Scott Williams, Artpace’s director of archives and communications, told the Current that this edition of Chalk It Up, with “over 100 murals planned from professional artists, school groups, the Artpace Teen Council, and community and corporate partners,” will boast “more artwork than ever before.” The redoubled focus on the art itself reflects a return to the core of what Chalk It Up is about: “showcasing San Antonio’s talented artist community.”
Of the smaller location this year – which finds the fest occupying space along Houston St. and Main St. rather than Houston St. and elsewhere – Williams said the folks at Artpace are “excited that part of the festival will be right outside [their] doorstep” and that they are even encouraging people to begin their day with a visit to the revered downtown art space.
Free, Sat Oct. 13, 10am-4pm, downtown Houston St. and along Main Ave., (210) 212-4900, artpace.org.
