Yup. It's that time of year again, folks. As the weather gets colder and the year begins to wrap up, the holidays start to come into full swing, which can either be super awesome or, let's face it, kind of shitty.
Sometimes it depends on the type of family you have, or if you have any family at all around. Whatever it is, whether you're just looking for something to get into on Thanksgiving or needing to escape family drama, here's 10 ways you can have a good time on Turkey Day.
Michael J. and the Foxes: Second Annual Foxgiving
If there’s any down side for local music aficionados to the fact that gifted singer-songwriter Michael Carrillo spends most of his time running his rad bar and venue Ventura, it’s that we get to see less of him with his two swell, and quite different, bands, Deer Vibes and Micheal J. & The Foxes. This week, however, folks have a chance to catch Carrillo out from behind the bar and at work with Michael J. & The Foxes, his heartbroken hoedown alt-country project. The Thanksgiving night affair, an ideal escape from the temptation of eating leftovers and the boredom of hanging out with family, marks the second year in a row that The Foxes have put on a Foxgiving (if you will). Whether you’re looking to cut loose or wind down, Carrillo and his crew, with their indie-folk-meets-demented-honky-tonk vibe, have got you covered. Free, 9pm, Ventura, 1011 Avenue B, (210) 802-6940, venturasatx.com

Thurzgayz: Lady Gaga Party
By the gist of the title, you can expect there to be two things: A bunch of Lady Gaga music, and a lot of gay folk. If your family is more conservative when it comes to politics and insists on bringing it up during Thanksgiving, here’s your chance to break away and dance into the night, BB. Gaga looks encouraged. 21+, Free, 10pm, Brass Monkey, 2702 N St Mary's St, (210) 480-4722

Facebook, Grupo Intocable
That’s right, your favorite Tejano band is back in SA and actually, this could be the dopest event to escape to during Turkey Day when that one family member (you know who you are) starts drinking a little too much and brings up old shit. Instead of enduring it like you do every year, throw two middle fingers up and take your favorite cousin and reminisce about the good times while getting down to some puro South Texas sounds. $35, 7pm, Cowboys DanceHall, 3030 NE Loop 410, (210) 646-9378, cowboysdancehall.com

Facebook, San Antonio Zoo
Open daily through the end of the year, Zoo Lights could be a dope something-to-do-besides-hanging-with-your-family that you don’t have to be 21+ to enjoy. Take your favorite niece away from that family madness and kick it under an array of twinkling lights while you sip hot cocoa, roast s'mores, ride camels and peep their Lakeside Lightshow. As a friendly reminder, the zoo wants to let folks know that when the sun sets most of the animals head inside, so if you arrive after 5 p.m., definitely enjoy the lights and be prepared to not see very many animals. Noon-9pm, Free with zoo membership, 903 N. St. Mary's St., sazoo.org
