Sir Doug and the homies

At the 2015 San Antonio Book Festival, I was fortunate enough to peep Sir Doug and the Genuine Texas Cosmic Groove at the Empire Theatre. Among a crowd of San Anto old-schoolers (including saxophonist Spot fucking Barnett, Sahm's mentor), Joe Nick Patoski's debut doc was a hit, causing mass applause with each Tornado lick and every time the singer's huge-chinned grin popped up on the screen.

Now, music writer, budding filmmaker and Wimberley resident Patoski is hitting the crowdfundning circuit, hoping to raise the dough to take his Groove national.

With over 40 Sahm tunes packed into the feature, licensing fees are a doozy. By July 31, Patoski hopes to raise $75,000 on Kickstarter to get his doc about-a-moving.

It's quite a vibrant flick, showing off the great absorber of culture and effuser of rock 'n' roll that was San Antonio native Doug Sahm. Though relatively overlooked on the national level, Patoski hopes that Texas Cosmic Groove will boost Sahm's chances at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

I mean, if Anthony Kiedis made it into the Cleveland museum, Sir Doug has every right to be in that fake-Louvre looking building.
