1. King’s Court Frankfurter Express (111 Kings Court, (210) 737-7774): Frankfurter Express is going to make you an offer you can’t refuse — their signature wienie, the ‘Dog Father,’ is a customer favorite and only $4.49. With grilled sauerkraut, bacon, onions and chili, this San Antonio staple makes our cut for one of the best dawgs in town. Also, for all you vegetarians out there, Frankfurter Express offers eight veggie wienies (don’t say it out loud, you WILL giggle) in a variety of flavors, including chef favorite Mexican chipotle.
BONUS: King’s Court Frankfurter Express is open on the Fourth of July.
2. Jerry’s Chicago Style Hot Dogs (149 E. Commerce, (210) 465-8200): Since plane tickets to Chicago tend to be on the expensive side, San Antonians have turned to Jerry’s Chicago Style Hot Dogs to satisfy a desire for hot dogs à la Windy City. The real Vienna Beef is simply delicious — we suggest ordering the Chicago Style Hot Dog (duh), which has mustard, sweet relish, chopped onions, tomato wedges, sport peppers, a kosher pickle spear, and kosher salt on it. All this on a steamed Poppy Seed bun.
BONUS: Chili cheese fries, pizza puffs, and the option for a DOUBLE dog.
3. RockerDogz (Mobile cart; follow RD on Facebook for updates, (210) 467-8066): RockerDogz has ventured into an unknown territory — hot dogs in the form of a sophisticated culinary treat. No, you didn’t misread that, and yes it is possible. Chef Kris Martinez makes an assortment of brilliant weenies that use all different types of flavors, textures, and colors. Try the Thai Kick Boxer, a dog topped with sweet chili sauce, pickled serrano peppers, mustard, sliced tomatoes, red cabbage slaw, lime sesame vinaigrette and cucumber slices.
BONUS: Get the tots.
