Shiver my timbers and blow me down. Today is International Talk like a Pirate day. It is the only day of the year a person is encouraged to talk about bung holes, wenches and hornpipes. It is the only day of the year you might get away with trying to pick up someone at a bar with “Avast me proud beauty, wanna know why my Roger is so jolly?” Beware: there may still be dangerous consequences for you.
The holiday began in the 90’s when pirate enthusiasts, John Baur and Mark Summers, decided there should be one day where everyone spoke like pirates. Arrr you serious? According to Baur and Summers, there is no point to this holiday. This holiday became popular when Baur and Summers asked Dave Berry from The Miami Herald to publish an informational piece about the holiday to ensure popularity. Since then, it has become a widely-known marketing tool for businesses and restaurants alike. Even the state of Michigan passed a resolution in June making the holiday official. While you may not get the day off from work, this is a great opportunity to earn yourself a free donut from Krispy Kreme.
Krispy Kreme is asking buccaneers to talk like a pirate to receive one free original glazed donut at participating locations. Don’t know where to start? You can go online to translate phrases into pirate-speak.
If you are really enthusiastic, you can wear the full pirate’s attire to receive a free dozen of the original glazed donut. You must wear three or more of the following accessories: eye patch, bandana, peg leg, leather belt, knickers, pirate hook, or pointy black boots to receive your booty. The donuts are definitely not rum-filled but it’s a pretty arrrsome deal.
Other businesses celebrating International Talk like a Pirate day include Twin Peaks, the Lion and Rose, San Antonio Children’s Museum and Long John Silver’s.
