Cured's Steve McHugh Earns James Beard Semifinalist Nod For Best Chef Southwest

The 2016 James Beard Award Semifinalists were announced this morning. The awards, known as the "Oscars of food," recognize chefs and restaurateurs changing the landscape of food in the U.S. After a two-year shut-out, San Antonio is back on the semifinalist list with Cured's Steve McHugh earning a semifinalist nomination in the Best Chef: Southwest category. 

McHugh, who opened Lüke San Antonio for John Besh and his own eatery, Cured, in late 2013, is the only San Antonio nominee in 2016. Other Texas chefs vying for the award include Omar Flores of Casa Rubia in Dallas, Bryce Gilmore of Austin's Barley Swine, Hugo Ortega of Houston's Caracol, Matt McAllister of Dallas' FT33, Manabu Horiuchi of Kata Robata in Houston, Teiichi Sakurai or Tei-An in Dallas, Seth Seigel-Gardner and Terrence Gallivan of The Pass in Houston, David Uygur of Lucia in Dallas and Justin Yu of Oxheart in Houston. 

Finalists will be announced March 15 and James Beard Foundation Book, Broadcast & Journalism Awards winners will be presented on April 26 in New York City.
