El Luchador Bar Opens this Summer off Roosevelt

Four friends are opening a neighborhood cantina this June and San Antonians can get a sneak peek this Sunday during Siclovia.

The space at 622 Roosevelt is leased by Ricardo Briones, Jesse Campos, Vanessa Martinez and Billy Mendoza, who are hoping El Luchador will keep that cantina vibe while making it accessible for others around the area.

"It's not gentrification, it's gentefication," Briones told the Current over the phone this afternoon. "We wanted to do it before someone else from Austin or California did it in that space."

Formerly Vaqueros and Andariegos, El Luchador includes a bar, dance floor and lounge area along with a patio and plenty of parking. The name comes from parking lot wrestling matches the bar used to host on weekends.

The foursome is hoping to add "weird, cool" craft beers, 32-ounce caguamas pa' los tios, mezcal and tequila along with Mexican beers on tap. Interiors are still being worked on by the owners who all grew up and live around the area and designer Kat Zuniga, but expect a few aesthetic changes ("shelves to leave your beer on when you're going to cumbia," said Briones, purse hooks, USB ports).

Sunday's event, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., will allow visitors to check out the spot and visit with Snake Hawk Press.
