Limited time offers at Whataburger are but fleeting moments in the 67-year-old burger magnate's lifespan. So it stands to reason that fans (i.e. most of South Texas) get hyped when new promotions are unleashed. The burger chain spiced up sausage biscuits and chicken biscuits earlier this summer, and now they're bringing even more heat with the new chorizo burger
as of this Monday.
The chorizo burger is described thusly:
"Two beef patties: never-frozen, juicy 100 percent pure beef, double patties
Chorizo: fresh blend of spices, bold and flavorful with a deep red color
Fire-roasted blend of poblano peppers, red peppers, and onions
Two slices of Monterey Jack cheese
New Creamy Chili Sauce mixes six different types of peppers for a zesty flavor
Toasted five-inch white bun."
I buckled in for the onslaught of flavors and headed to my nearest store to taste test.
The burger is hefty — think of the patty melt and you're quite literally halfway there. But the chorizo burger packs in the spice from the poblano and red peppers and combined with a "creamy chili" sauce make for only part of the mouthfeel. Any fans of chorizo can attest to the slight slickness that coats the palate and this is no different. Though the burger is tasty and spicy enough to flavor without destroying your tastebuds (and goes great with spicy ketchup if you want to guarantee some light heartburn like I did), two patties are daunting. And at 1,140 calories total with fries (2,100 mg sodium, just saying), you may want to enjoy this South Texas ode on cheat day.
The chorizo burger LTO is out now (alongside a chorizo taquito with cheese) and no exact dates are given for its adieu. Prices vary by market.
