Menudo isn't just for post-party Sunday mornings anymore.
At El Luchador, menudo has a place on the shot board these days. The shot trio — celery salt-rimmed lime, Vida Mezcal or Hornitos Tequila, and yes, menudo — is known as sopa lucha. Order it on Sundays or during Loteria Nights every other Tuesday.
According to co-owner Ricardo Briones, partner Jesse Campos visited Chicago recently with his brother Aaron where they enjoyed Estrella Negra's Bandera Shots, a similar trio that uses pozole.
"He talked to the owner of the restaurant and got his blessing to do it in San Anto but with menudo," Briones said in a message.
The shot itself is for menudo fans. Though there was no chewy hominy in sight in mine (which I guess would make shooting difficult), the menudo has a lighter than usual broth, but a beautiful array of chiles and spices. The recommended shooting order by bartender Mary Bailey is to lick the salt, shoot the spirit, followed by the lime juice, and ending with the menudo.
Yes, it will leave menudo's signature oil sheen on your lips, but it's worth it.
The Sopa Lucha is served on wooden blocks, decked out with lucha posters and is $8.
