An 84-year-old institution has moved over to its third home. Earl Abel's, which closed its Austin Hwy. location in October is currently in a soft opening phase at its new home at 1639 Broadway.

Here are a few quick thoughts we had during our first visit:

1. Always get the pie/cake first. The new shop has a shiny new baking corner and the pies lure you in from outside.

2. Give them a minute. Soft openings often mean everyone's still adjusting. Our order was taken by the dude installing the new point of sale (POS) systems.

3. The new location still reminds one of Timbo's (RIP), but the remodeling wasn't all for naught. It's modern, casual, comfortable and there are roosters everywhere.

4. The chicken is just as great as we recall, and now there's bison to choose from. Points for protein diversity.

5. Orders are now taken at the counter. The servers are mostly gone, but the remaining "food runners" are service mavens who should teach clinicals on how to keep tables happy.

6. The bar is still not open, but I'm hoping for lots of bubbles to go with the fried chicken. According to the staff, it should be open within the week.

Opening hours will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday. The restaurant will have reduced hours for Christmas Eve and will be closed on Christmas Day.

1639 Broadway, (210) 822-3358.
