It may have been a record temperature day for San Antonio, but the heat didn't keep diners from checking out the first pop-up by Meadow, a new Southern fare concept coming to The Alley on Bitters this September.
Helmed by chef PJ Edwards and wife Lindsey Edwards, Meadow hosted its first of two confirmed pop-ups at Cullum's Attagirl
in Tobin Hill on Monday night and San Antonio turned out to sample the goods. According to Chris Cullum, about 80 to 100 people made their way to the small shop that evening.
The menu featured a nine items including a collection of starters and larger mains, along with a list of farmers where the produce and proteins hailed from, with prices ranging from $5 to $20.
And though the kitchen was almost immediately slammed, orders came out readily. The beef tartare with a thick piping of smoked yolk Bibb lettuce served as a solid starter, while the figs with ash chèvre, unruly watercress and a blueberry vinegar made for a robust dish of sweet, tart and truly Texan flavors. Another highlight came via the warm okra salad with pickled peaches, dotted with jalapeño, fried shallots and Texas pecans with its blend of textures and gamut-spanning flavors.
Though the creamed corn fritters hit the table at the end of our meal, the fresh-fried dollops were a sweet ending to our meal.
