San Antonio Chef Launches Kickstarter for Olive Leaf Tea

Olive oil is well known for its potential health benefits, but new products like Special Leaf teas, made with olive leaf extract, promise to deliver more antioxidants and new flavors to consumers, without drinking a bottle of oil.

Chef Chris Cook, a local culinary consultant and VP for Chef Cooperatives, launched a Kickstarter this week to make Special Leaf Tea the first bottled olive leaf tea on the market. The beverage line is made with fresh, quality ingredients and features three flavors: original, sweet and lemon verbena.

"The teas are unique— they’re floral, semi-creamy but well-balanced and leave you with a nourished feeling like coconut water,” Cook told the Current. “I drink about two quarts of it a day, and it helps with my arthritis so that I don't have to rely on medications.”

Cook said Special Leaf teas contain 200 percent more antioxidants than green tea and four times the Vitamin C of any other source.
The Kickstarter aims to raise $8,000 needed for packaging and marketing materials, as Cook prepares his first orders and begins the manufacturing process. At the time of publication, the campaign had raised $5,471 of its $8,000 goal.

He developed the concept for Special Leaf nearly six years ago, while working at an orchard. After years of testing flavors and graduating from the culinary business accelerator, Break Fast & Launch, he decided the products were ready to share with the public, and potentially improve customers' quality of life.

“I basically worked with everything related to the olive tree, and one of the things I was doing was making tea," he said."I kept working as a chef, but always wanted to focus on this. I'm happy to be able to finally walk away from the restaurants and bring this to fruition.”
