The spats of artificial turf, inducing a squat in the park feeling, rested beside the main stage and back fence tent posts. Cheer Up Charlie’s played home to a shoegazing medley of fuzz and drone Friday night at the Ad Hoc SXSW showcase.
Featuring up-and-coming acts Nu Sensei, Sam Flax, LODRO and more, much of the night was an intro course in bottom-heavy guitar pace and kicking rocks with your Chuck Taylors.
As the night came to a close, Nashville’s Diarrhea Planet took to the stage, bringing along their brash humor and party music. The sight of the quad-guitarist lineup, along with bassist and drummer, were a signal of the riff-laden energy that was abound.
Performing such tracks as “Ghost with a Boner,” with its simplistic lyrics “Ghost with a boner/ Ghost with a boner/Drinking my beer/Drinking my beer and getting drunk,” Diarrhea Plant was pure movement, as crowds bounced to and fro.
The set closed with two of the group’s guitarists scaling the thirty foot staging columns to perform dueling solos set against the tops of the early budding trees.
SXSW plays home to many independent and DIY acts. Some are fashion shows with guitars while others grind away hoping to finally land that record deal. It’s refreshing to see a group that doesn’t take themselves too seriously, enjoying the festival and its audience.
