SA Produced Music Video Spinning on MTV

San Antonio’s own Daniel Basulto and Jaime Sanchez won this week’s Freshman pick on MTVU, MTV’s college channel. On The Freshman viewers vote for an emerging artist’s video play in on-air rotation for MTV. Basulto, who had lived in Brooklyn for a spell, produced the song “In Music We Trust” specifically for young Will Apollo (aka Guuru Sagod) of Queens. Jaime Sanchez, RAW Artists’ Filmmaker of the Year, directed the video, and Basulto took on the final editing. While the NY location is central to the video, there’s no denying the strong San Antonio connection with Guuru Sagod sporting a classic Spurs cap. In an email explaining the process, Basulto wrote:

To me what is still mind-blowing is the fact that this was my first attempt at video editing. With no experience and just my ideas, I crafted something that is considered "acceptable" on TV. My goal when I produced the song and video was to become the catalyst for Apollo’s career. I put hours into it picking and fine-tuning. Well, one year later I seem to have accomplished that goal.

In the glory days of MTV, when they actually played music videos and reported music news, kids learned about rising hip-hop talent on “Yo MTV Raps” after school. While many bemoan that MTV has long lost its network relevance to music, there's still some sort of commitment to emerging talent through programming like ‘The Freshman.’
