"In the Mayan calendar, "Sexto Sol" means the Sixth Sun. Accordingly, the sixth sun is meant to indicate the beginning of the age of progress. And Sexto Sol is a progressive delivery of existing musical undertones." That telling description is lifted straight from SA Chicano funk outfit Sexto Sol's website, laying it straight for any fools like me who thought that "Sexto" was a play on the six-piece band.

Composed of guitarist Eddie Hernandez, keyboardist and vocalist Samuel Villela, bassist Greg Goodman, drummer Juan Ramos and percussionist James Moody, Sexto Sol is SA's answer to Sly and the Family Stone. With big-ass funk beats meeting Afro-Cuban rhythms and straight up rock 'n'roll, Sexto Sol shows are an exercise in dance music, cutting rugs wherever they go.

This Saturday at Sam's Burger Joint, Sexto Sol will stretch out on Black Magic Woman fantasies on tunes like the "Chicken Foot Boogaloo," looking to help raise the dough for their third studio release Let There Be Fire. Also on the Sam's bill are accordionists Juanito Castillo and Rio Jordan, dancing their way over the squeeze box's typewriter keys. Sexto Sol's like-minded cumbia-funkers Los de Esta Noche will open and DJ JJ Lopez will keep dancers grooving in between acts.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vW_hwfxVCYk
