What do you get when you cross the trippy, rhythmic sensationalism of Pop Pistol's Alex Scheel with the voice and vision of local jackie-of-all-trades, artist Daniela "ZaaZaa" Riojas? The answer lies in the group's ethereal new music video for "Frida's Heart." Much like their video for "INKA," which was filmed live in Alto Putumayo, Peru, "Frida's Heart," and Femina-X, are firmly rooted in the organic and ephemeral, a fitting juxtaposition to their programmed beats and synth-y swells.
Here's what the group had to say about the heavy, heady video: The video centers around the San Antonio River and Brackenridge Park, using these geological sites as sacred grounds for offering and prayer. Daniela engages in a ritualistic self-sacrifice, presenting her own body as gift to the river in exchange for its rebirth. In this way, the sacrifice serves as reclamation for Yanaguana, the waters which nurtured and gave sustenance to the indigenous people of this region long before colonization.
Though the group has been together for little over two years, they have been busy carving out their own place in the local music scene due to their ability to make each performance a sensual experience, utilizing visuals and space alongside the creation of their unique, hyper-personal yet communicative soundscapes.
