If you are a lover of any of the many incarnations of what gets generalized as the Tex-Mex sound, there’s no excuse for not being at Sam’s this weekend.

First on the perfectly paired bill is Joe King Carrasco, who plays everything from country to rock & roll, tequila-soaked reggae to the sped-up polka that eventually became nueva wave. Heavily influenced by the Tex-Mex sounds of San Antonio, particularly the Sir Douglas Quintet and Sunny Ozuna, Carrasco has taken their formula to incredible (and very often successful) lengths.

Patricia Vonne, who shares this bill with Carrasco, is a San Antonio-born songstress whose sound, full of melodrama, poetry, and movement, hearkens back to her own roots in Spain. Taken together, these two admirably represent both the future and the past of Tex-Mex music.

Saturday, July 22, $12-$50, 8pm, Sam’s Burger Joint, 330 E. Grayson St., (210) 223-2830, samsburgerjoint.com
