Located off N. St. Mary’s, The Squeezebox is aptly named for its ability to churn out some of the best tunes in San Antonio. With either a cocktail or a cerveza in hand (or both, who’s stopping you?), you too can get down to the September 30 lineup slated to perform during this year’s San Antonio Music Showcase.
Featuring artists and DJs like Boca Negra, Chulita Vinyl Club, The Indigenauts, and Friends of Sound, this night is sure to be bumping with the best beats. In fact, two of these outfits have contributed to SA’s very own vinyl renaissance: Chulita Vinyl Club and Friends of Sound. The former was founded in December of 2014 by Claudia Saenz as a way to place women of color at the forefront of the male-dominated DJ/club scene. Saenz describes her organization as a “movement” that “[celebrates] women who love vinyl.” What’s not to love about a group of passionate women celebrating their Latina culture and heritage through music?
In 2004, Dave Haffner opened Friends of Sound on the bustling South Congress strip in Downtown Austin. In such a saturated music market — Austin has over a dozen full-time record stores — Friends of Sound needed a niche to set it apart from the crowd. So they made the trek down from the vinyl-lusting city of Austin to open a San Antonio location at 700 Fredericksburg Road, where the store hopes to capitalize on SA’s growing taste for the medium. Their work will be featured at The Squeezebox, as well as music from the genre-defying, multicultural group The Indigenauts.
According to lead singer/guitarist Pablo Menicas, they are a “group of empowered musicians who celebrate [their] indigenous heritage, learn from the experiences/knowledge of [their] ancestors, and navigate this modern world with a true sense of self." Their new age Latino rock fusions give off such chill vibes, it’ll be a long time before you can stop thinking about those heartfelt string solos and reggae beats. However, if you want to dance, Boca Negra’s Latin/Fusion combos will provide some fast-paced rhythms you can really shake to. Whatever mood you’re in for that night, The Squeezebox definitely has you covered.
