Yass biiiiiiiiitchhhh! It’s real! With rumors circulating about Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross remixing John Carpenter’s “Halloween Theme - Main Title,” waking up this morning to the pure scary goodness that this remix did in fact happen, is making this particular Friday the 13th, our favorite … probably ever.
In celebration of the general spookiness of Friday the 13th and also the release of director/composer John Carpenter’s Anthology: Movie Themes 1974 – 1998 (slated for release October 20), the boys in Nine Inch Nails decided to throw their magic on a theme that has haunted us for generations.
"I clearly remember my friends and I at 13 years old conning our parents into letting us see Halloween when it came out in 1978," Reznor said in a prepared statement. "We left the theater forever changed. We were damaged and scarred, with the shit genuinely scared out of us and that theme stuck firmly in our heads. John Carpenter, it's your fault that I turned out the way I did."
The sprawling 7:49 minute track is a slow burn, pulling listeners through the familiar Reznor/Ross corridors of echoes and soft noise before the familiar piano riff comes in reminding us how actually fucking scary this shit is. Towards the end, the song crescendos with distorted drum beats and thick keyboard tones that sounds like they could’ve come off of NIN’s The Fragile, before quickly faded into the darkness where we’re sure Michael Myers is probably waiting for us.
