Houston, Texas has always been a hotbed for blues and soul music. Notable legends include Archie Bell & The Drells, The (Jazz) Crusaders, The Laws Family (Hubert, Eloise, & Ronnie), Yolonda Adams, Destiny’s Child and Beyoncé, and of course, the wonderful, Barbara Lynn. We can’t forget the Thunder Soul sounds of the Kashmere Stage Band either.
All that said, H-town is continuing its tradition of producing sweet sounding soul music. Quickly making their way onto the national stage, The Suffers are one of the latest and most successful bands representing Gulf Coast Soul! Their debut self-titled LP dropped in February of 2016 and featured the standout tunes “Make Some Room” and “Stay.”
Recent showcases include NPR’s Tiny Desk and Live on KEXP (highly recommended viewing and streaming online). The band’s Texas-sized big brass sound is led by vocalist Kam Franklin and for fans of sister funk like Lyn Collins (another Texas Soul legend), Betty Wright, and Sharon Jones — Franklin and the Suffers are sure to please.
