A living legend, Augie Meyers’ style and his Vox Continental has become one of music’s most distinctive keyboard sounds in Tex-Mex music. Meyers is known for his work with the Sir Douglas Quintet and the Texas Tornados and has also performed with Bob Dylan and John Hammond. In an interview with the Current
almost a decade ago, Meyers talked about his hit “Hey Baby Que Paso.”
“I was going with this lady — I won’t mention her name — before I got married. She said, ‘Man, why do you play that Mexican music? I don’t like it.’ I said, ‘There’s the door, sweetheart.’ So she left. I didn’t hear from her for a couple of weeks, and I wrote: ‘Hey baby, que paso?/ I thought I was your only vato.’ About six months later, she called me and said all her friends loved that record. She said, ‘I’d sure like to get a copy.’ I said, ‘Yeah, you can buy it at Wal-Mart.’ So she never called me back.”
