When Third Root drops a track, everyone should really stop what they’re doing and take notice because, 1) they’re one of the most talented rap groups to emerge out of South Texas and 2) their lyricism is important and often is commentary on the socio and political climate of the nation.

Yea, Easy Lee (MoJoe), Dr. Marco Cervantes (Mexican StepGrandfather) and DJ Chicken George, don’t really need much introduction. Since forming in 2011, and with three albums out now, the group has been active in mobilizing the black and brown communities in San Antonio and the region by tackling themes of racism, flawed education systems and police brutality in their lyrics.

On Tuesday, July 3 the group debuted their first new song in almost a year “Fantasma Horns,” which features the iconic horn section of the Grammy Award-winning band Grupo Fantasma. The genre-fusing song blends the sounds of Latin Jazz big band with the urgent lyricism of Golden Era hip-hop.

The track opens with Grupo Fatasma’s horns and DJ Chicken George’s scratching as a boom bap meets-latin groove beat lets listeners know “this shit is about to come with some flavor in your ear.” Start to finish, the track is a banger and is actually the first single from the trio’s upcoming EP Trill Pedagogy: Summer Semester. The track was produced by illfudge and Adrian Quesada. It was recorded at Electric Deluxe Recorders Studio in Austin.

The Trill Pedagogy: Summer Semester EP will arrive to all digital streaming outlets soon after on July 20th. Digital EPs for Fall Semester, Winter Flex, and Spring Semester will follow and eventually be combined into one full length LP for fans who wish to own the complete collection on vinyl.

Summer is fixin’ to be LIT, y’all. Listen to "Fatasma Horns" here.
