This weekend it’s time to party like it’s 2008 – sort of. Longtime fans of live, local music have been seeing the acts on this stacked bill, in one form or another, share the stage for at least that long. And, with such consistently (and joyfully!) inventive bands as these, who could complain?
Buttercup, for one, is a goddamn institution in this town, having shored up its cult-like fan base over the course of 16 years and more than five LPs worth of cheeky, (sometimes) sentimental and charismatically-executed indie pop-rock. We Leave at Midnight, the project of odd/intricate pop mastermind John Dailey, has been around nearly nine years and has released two LPs, including 2016’s masterful The Holy Rolling Flower Band
. The band’s sound is generally described as harmony and tempo change-laden indie rock, but that doesn’t quite capture the gently psychedelic, endlessly inventive and complex music this gem of a local act creates. At this show, fans can expect old favorites as well as brand-new stuff from both acts. Chris Maddin will open the evening.
$5, Fri Aug 24, 9pm, Limelight, 2718 N. St. Mary’s St., ticketfly.com.
