Oscar-Nominated Shorts

Unless Jada Pinkett Smith starts a campaign to boycott movies that are less than 40 minutes long (#OscarsSoShort), make plans to get to the local art-house theater to watch the short films that were nominated this year for an Academy Award. There are three programs: Documentary Shorts, Live-Action Shorts and Animated Shorts. Doc shorts include Body Team 12, about Red Cross workers in Liberia whose job it is to collect the dead bodies of Ebola victims in West Africa; and A Girl in the River, a film on honor killings in Pakistan. Live-action shorts include Stutterer, which follows a typographer who must face his lifelong speech impediment; and Day One, about a U.S. Army interpreter whose first day on the job doesn’t go as planned. Animated shorts include Pixar’s Sanjay’s Super Team, where a young Indian boy imagines Hindu gods as superheroes; and World of Tomorrow, a sci-fi story told from the perspective of the director’s 4-year-old niece. $7-$9.50, 11:45am & 6:15pm (Animated); 1:55pm & 8:10pm (Live-Action); 4:05pm & 10:30pm (Documentary) Fri-Sun; Santikos Bijou, 4522 Fredericksburg Road, (210) 734-4552, santikos.com. — Kiko Martínez
