5 Geeky Things to Help You Beat the Heat This Summer

This summer, why drive to the beach, get sunburned, and sand in your suit when you could stay indoors, enjoy the air conditioning, and do something geeky for a change? San Antonio has plenty of things to do during the week and weekend to keep you out of the sun, but still having fun. Best part: they're free.

Anime at the Alamo

Every Tuesday, 7:30pm

Anime at the Alamo is a weekly event sponsored by FUNimation in SA. Anime are cartoons native to Japan but imported to the States. The look and story differ wildly different from American animation or prime time television. This weekly event features new and old shows, such as Pumpkin Scissors, Jormungand, and Psycho-Pass. Bring the whole family and enjoy a night of stylish entertainment.

Location: Alamo Draft House, 1255 SW Loop 410, San Antonio, TX 78227

Trading Card Games

Friday - Sunday

If games like "Go Fish" and "Bridge" belong in the realm of traditional card games, then trading card games are definitely non-traditional. Using a uniquely sorted deck of cards, players face-off with one another in a battle to out wit their opponents using a variety of combination card plays. The most popular trading card games are currently Yugioh!, Pokemon, Vanguard, and Magic: The Gathering. Though tournaments require an entry fee, people can duel one another just for fun.

Location: Heroes and Fantasies, 4923 Northwest Loop #410

Board Games

Every Monday, 6:00 p.m.

Board games have gone well beyond just Monopoly and Candyland. Games like Settlers of Catan, Rio Grande, Android: Netrunner are in depth, immersive and just as fun. There’s no need to rush to the store to buy the game, though. Comic shops have meet-ups full of people waiting to play. Don’t worry about not knowing the rules either; this crowd is happy to teach new comers.

Video Game Tournaments

Friday afternoons and evenings

One of the most ubiquitous forms of entertainment adults and kids love are video games. Game Over Video Games hosts “Flash Back Friday” a friendly, head-to-head tournament style video game competition. Play games from a variety of genres and systems including Racing, fighting, and shoot ‘em ups from systems like Nintendo 64, Turbo Graphx 16, Dreamcast, and more. At these events, winning is not as important as having fun.
