The Urban West: Chinatown
With the California Water Wars as its historical anchor, Roman Polanski’s neo-noir classic Chinatown spins a mysterious web within 1930s-era Los Angeles. Released in 1974, the film follows private detective J.J. “Jake” Gites (Jack Nicholson) on an increasingly bizarre investigation involving Water Department chief Hollis Mulwray (Darrell Zwerling), his widow Evelyn (Faye Dunnaway), her dangerous father Noah Cross (John Huston) and a young girl caught in the eye of a sordid storm. Lone Star Live Summer Concert Series
Brought to you by Lone Star Beer, the San Antonio Current, Bjorn's Audio Video and Maverick Music Festival, the Lone Star Live Summer Concert Series returns to the Arneson with garage rock fervor, hosting the tunes of SA’s Dark Planes and Austin’s Sweet Spirit. Black and Brown Sounds in SA
UTSA’s Mexican American Studies Program, African American Studies Program, Consortium for Social Transformation and Office of Student Activities have enlisted local rappers, musicians and thinkers to give you Black and Brown Sounds in SA: A Cultural Afromestizaje Roundtable and Concert. The event will feature musical performances by killer Saytown hip-hop outfits Third Root (above) and Blend Phonetics as well as talks centered on overlapping cultural-identity concerns and social justice. Super Xicana Power Hour
Super Xicanas Mari Xingas (Marisela Barrera) and Sweet Jane (Jane Madrigal) are "on the loose and broadcasting." The latest edition of their multi-disciplinary Super Xicana Power Hour promises a wealth of uncensored opinions along with music and enlivened interviews with Super Xicana dignitaries Patricia Castillo and Daniela Riojas. The "ol' skool, new skool, nuevo cool performance broadcast" will be recorded in front of a live audience and available as a podcast as well. Poetry in Motion
Billed as a “steamy evening of queer burlesque and spoken word,” the Uptown Studio’s Poetry in Motion event unites the talents of playwright Jesús Alonzo and the 2014 cast of his Jotos del Barrio (see pp. 27) with those of Dino Foxx, Jasper St. James, Stephan Gaeth, Keelin Christopher and Black Orchid (above).
