6 Ways to Get Your Drink/Grub on this Week

Friday, May 2: Is there anything better than free barbecue samples? Yes: free barbecue and beer samples, my friend. The Institute of Texan Cultures will host Cooking Up Culture with eats via Pure Texan BBQ Co. and craft beer samples from Alamo Beer and The Barley Blacksmith. The San Antonio Cerveceros will also be on-hand to chat about how you can get brewing at home. And if you’re into learning about ’cue, sit in on a presentation by Jeff Savell of Texas A&M’s Department of Meat Sciences (that’s a thing). Free, 6-8pm, 801 E Cesar E. Chavez, (210) 458-2300,

Saturday, May 3: Central Market is kicking off its Passport Italy with a day-long celebration of food and wine via Italia. Saturday’s event include a ribbon cutting with the Christopher Columbus Italian Society of SA, live music by Opera San Antonio, prosciutto carvings and a special cracking of a rare Parmesan cheese wheel. The day continues at 5 p.m. with a free food and wine stroll through the store, which introduces customers to Italian dishes and vinos available through May 15. Free, 10am, 4821 Broadway, (210) 368-8600,

Sunday, May 4: Pub quizzes don’t get geekier than this. Geeks Who Drink will host “Let the Wookie Win: A Star Wars Quiz” on Sunday night to celebrate May the Fourth (get it?). Han Solo wannabes can use the force as they’re quizzed on the original trilogy of films, Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. None of that Jar Jar Binks bullshit here. $5 admission for each player, 7 pm, Firehouse Pub & Grill, 5380 Walzem,

Sunday, May 4: Fiesta has come and gone, but we’re still keeping it puro with the Barbacoa & Big Red Spring Festival at R&J Music Pavilion. Sample some of the city’s best barbacoa as paired with SA’s drink of choice (aside from margaritas, of course). The music lineup includes Grupo Ondo, Mark Flores and the Soda Creek Band and Ernie Garibay & Cats Don’t Sleep. Free admission, 11am-7pm, 18086 Pleasanton, (210) 776-5699,

Tuesday, May 6: Philanthropy is always fun. The Big Give (a 24-hour long donation campaign) and San Anto Cultural Arts are teaming up with Taps y Tapas for a donation drive happy hour filled with discounted snacks, live music and computer stations for easy-to-make donations. Free admission, 6:30-7:30pm, 1012 N Flores,

Wednesday, May 7: Get to know your neighbors while chowing down on tasty snacks at the Five Points Block Party. Alamo Bike Shop will team up with neighbors Mid-Point Grill and Taps Y Tapas for a night of cheap tacos and bike accessory discounts. Taps y Tapas will offer $5 tall boys and tacos, while Mid-Point Grill will whip up chicken on a stick with fries and a drink for $5. Free admission, 6-9pm, 1016 N Flores, (210) 226-2453,
