Although the movie scene probably wouldn’t work too well in a contemporary, non-ironic teenage romance — a recent high school graduate (John Cusack) raises a briefcase-sized boombox above his head to play Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” for his brainy girlfriend — 1989’s Say Anything is still considered by many to be one of the best rom-coms in cinematic history. A year before the film’s 30th anniversary, Cusack is making his way to San Antonio to sit down with audience members after a screening of the movie at the Tobin Center, where he’ll talk about his breakout role in filmmaker Cameron Crowe’s directorial debut. In 2006, Entertainment Weekly placed Say Anything 11th on their list of the 50 Best High School Movies. It beat out other ’80s classics like Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles (The Breakfast Club took the top slot). Recently, Cusack told Mashable about the iconic boombox scene: “For some movies, [fans will] have a line that they’ll repeat to you a lot of times, but that one is more just a vibe.” VIP tickets to the event include a post-show photo op with Cusack. If you plan to ask for an autograph, bring your own pen.
