Now that In-N-Out Burger has officially invaded the Alamo City, San Antonio should familiarize itself with the fast food chain's well known "secret" menu. Learn the in's and out's of menu items like animal-style fries and the Flying Dutchman.

The Double Meat

The Double Meat is pretty self-explanatory. It's just a burger with two beef patties and no cheese. It comes with lettuce, tomatoes and a slathering of In-N-Out's "spread." Onions are optional.

The MxC

Yes, there's a code to ordering hamburgers at this fast food joint. "MxC" means "meat by cheese." It indicates how many hamburger patties and slices of cheese you want to jam in between a pair of In-N-Out buns. For example, a 4x4 is a burger with four patties and four slices of cheese. It's also insane.

Animal Style

Requesting "animal style" gets you an an extra slathering of In-N-Out's spread, which is basically thousand island dressing. You can get your fries made animal style as well.

Protein Style

Protein style is a relic of the Atkin's diet, a bunless hamburger made-to-order any way you request it. Ordering a 4x4 protein style will cut down on the carbs, but don't think that it's healthy.

The Flying Dutchman

What is the Flying Dutchman? Basically, it's a hamburger stripped down at its most minimal. Two slices of cheese are melted between two grilled hamburger patties. Order your Flying Dutchman animal style and it comes with diced onions in addition to In-N-Out's special spread.

The Grilled Cheese and the Veggie Burger

The Grilled Cheese takes the hamburger out of the hamburger. It's basically a meatless hamburger with melted cheese, lettuce, tomato and that special spread you've been hearing so much about. Meanwhile, you can order a veggie burger, also known as a wish burger, which goes the extra mile of removing the cheese from the grilled cheese leaving you hamburger buns and vegetables. You can also refer to the veggie burger as my own personal hell.

Mustard Grilled

Also known as a Mustard Fried, this request gets you a hamburger patty that's smothered in mustard before it's slapped on the griddle. It also comes with pickles, unless you specifically nix them. You can also order a Mustard Heavy, which, as one would presume, is a Mustard Grilled that goes heavy on the mustard.

Onion Options

In-N-Out makes sure it accommodates onion lovers. Diners have their choice or ordering onions four different ways: whole fresh, whole chopped, whole grilled or grilled chopped, or any combination of the four.

Chopped Chilis

You can also have chopped banana peppers added to your burgers or fries, because why the hell not?

Cheese Fries

This is exactly what it sounds like, melted cheese poured over your fry order.

Root Beer Float

You can customize your desserts, too. One way is by ordering a root beer float, which should need no further explanation.

Neapolitan Shake

Why stick to one boring shake flavor? Get all three: strawberry, vanilla or chocolate.

Black and White Shake

Or if you hate strawberry with every fiber of your being, you can just order a black and white shake (chocolate and vanilla).

Other Options

You can request mustard or ketchup instead of spread or extra salt or no salt. You can tell them how toasted you want your buns. You can also add extra everything or order your patties cooked medium rare or well done. Or you can combine special menu options to create your own obscene Frankenburger creation.
