Robert L. B. Tobin was an avid collector of art, rare books, and theatre designs. He and his mother, Margaret, were actively involved in the McNay since its founding in 1954. Although Tobin served on the board of numerous cultural institutions, including MoMA and the Metropolitan Opera, he focused much of his attention on the McNay and collected with the McNay in mind. Tobin was independent, with an eye for diverse subjects and beautiful but tough works. This exhibition highlights the unusual nature of his expressionist prints—both visually and psychologically striking, they present a dedication to the modernist aesthetic.
