There's something to be said about a place that knows its target audience. At The Bread Box, which opened last November, owners Tina and Lucas Kent know what their customers want and they're delivering it.
Set inside the former home of Bahia Azul, The Bread Box has found a home after launching three years ago. Both Kents have years of kitchen and service experience — she worked as general manager for Cappy's in Alamo Heights for close to 20 years, while he toiled over bread starters at Lüke San Antonio, Cappy's and Bliss.
Now inside their own space — all 3,000 square feet of it — the couple and their small staff crank out tasty breakfast and lunch items along with expanding their wholesale and retail vending. Before we get into the menu, I have to mention the impossibly adorable dining room. Salmon chairs, stenciled tables and bright walls help tie The Bread Box together as a chic and capable spot. Once you find your place at one of the tables, you'll want to pore over the menu and make some truly difficult decisions.
I recommend going with a group so everyone can sample each other's plate. A fan of all things Judd Nelson, I ordered the Breakfast Club served on the Box's addictive English muffin, with scrambled cheese eggs, tomato and bacon, and was pleasantly surprised as the sandwich's structure. My cauliflower soup, thankfully non-dairy, was a perfectly seasoned and chunky cup that I should have ordered a bowl of.
A return visit later, I took in the tuna nicoise sandwich, which has already made a return to the specials board. Enveloped on fresh potato ciabatta, the sandwich was messy, sure, but a great addition to SA's sammich game. Chock-full of white tuna, fresh green beans, hard-boiled eggs, grapes, capers and kalamata olives, I really hope this sando becomes a regular menu item.
We took in a slice of their Birthday Cake, which just makes the day just a bit brighter. Flavors change often, but the vanilla with vanilla bean buttercream was especially dainty.
Not content with one dessert (and really, I was at a bakery, so all bets were off), we left with a slice of ultra-moist carrot bread, fudgy brownies and a pecan bar that I'm still drooling over. Try and show more restraint than I did — the counter-top display case wins every time.
