With another location in Waco, Backyard Burgers made its way to San Antonio in October. The restaurant's menu has a range of chicken sandwiches and burgers, including backyard burgers with 100 percent Black Angus beef, Hawaiian and Miz Grazi's spicy burgers. A new downtown sushi bar has applied for a mixed beverage license: Yokonyu Sushi Bar and Restaurant will open at 301 E. Houston.

Learn to cook
On November 27, instructors at "La Gran Tamalada" will teach participants how to prepare tamales in a four-hour course at San Fernando City Centre, 115 Main from 10am-2pm. Cost is $35; to register and for times, call 733-7327.
A free vegetarian cooking seminar with Gee Gee Bessey will be offered at Sun Harvest, 2502 Nacogdoches, on November 27 at 10:30am. The seminar will feature tofu as the main ingredient. For information, call 525-1844.
Decorate your own gingerbread house at the Central Market cooking school on November 27. The class is for students ages 8-17, and will demonstrate how to assemble a house with candies, cookies, and other edible treats. The course is from 10am-12:30pm.; the cost is $40. The 11th Annual Nutcracker Sweets will host an evening of desserts from chefs around the country at Oak Hills Country Club, 5403 Fredericksburg Road. The event benefits the Battered Women's Shelter. Matisse restaurant, 13259 Blanco Road, will transform into a gallery featuring the works of Carla Veliz and Ginny Garcia to celebrate "San Antonio's rich heritage of diverse artistic expression" on November 26 from 6:30-9:30pm. Veliz will present abstract and figurative paintings, and Garcia will feature her candles, blown glass lampshades, and tabletop figurines. For information, call 479-0910.
