Arguably the most entertaining Texan to rise trough the ranks of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Mesquite native Alyssa Edwards (born Justin Johnson) is a crown-winning pageant queen, youth dance instructor and fierce proprietor of Beyond Belief Dance Studio. Known in certain circles as the “Vanessa Williams of drag” (based on a 2010 scenario in which she had to relinquish her crown to fellow Texan Coco Montrese), the former Miss Gay America emerged as a fan favorite on the fifth season of the reality competition series and recently returned to the small screen as a contestant on the second edition of RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars. Named in honor of Who’s the Boss? star Alyssa Milano, Edwards famously busts out her dancing chops to take drag performances over the top, doing high kicks and splits donning high-heeled boots, dramatic costumes and gravity-defying “Miss Texas” hair. Armed with an endlessly quotable gift of gab (“I don’t get cute, I get drop-dead gorgeous”), Edwards recently rolled out Alyssa’s After Party, a YouTube show that plays out with a little help from “homies, guy pals, gal pals, sisters, brothers, drag daughters, friends and family.” Rey Lopez brings the sassy Southern belle back to San Antonio for an evening of campy holiday antics at Heat.
