More resto RIPs have rolled in since our last A-B update. Merchants Bistro comes as no surprise. “Jane & I have decided to close Merchants as of today. It’s been a roller-coaster ride … Unfortunately we never were able to make the connection with enough guests to become financially successful,” read the email. As we have observed in the past, ’09 is a tough crowd.

Also anticipated was the demise of Reggiano’s on Loop 1604. We don’t want to make this into a cautionary tale, but despite serious efforts to be known as a culinary destination, the handsome restaurant was never able to overcome its meat-rack reputation. A-B was even hit on during a food reconnaissance — she came on with the “Are you a lawyer?” line. Wrongggg.

But really surprising is the demise of both the last Tom’s Ribs (the death knell of the baked and then grill-marked namesake product?) and the Le Peep outlet on Nacogdoches. A-B never went to LP, both because of its chain aspect and its stupid name. (Le Breakfast and Le Lunch?) But the prices were fair and the selection admittedly wide within its self-imposed limits. An outlet on Stone Oak remains. We’ll be watching.
