AMUSE-Bouche

Blanca Aldacohas garnered herself a rio-tastic triumph: Her custom-created libation swept the San Antonio River Foundation’s first annual Rivertini Pour-Off on Saturday, May 9, at Swig. Blanca’s Cucumber Martini earned a near-unanimous First Place from the judges (Dave Davies of Texas Public Radio, Richard Perez of the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, Ernie Zuniga, co-host of Fox News First on KABB, and me) and ran away with the coveted Peoples’ Choice Award. A genuinely refreshing, locally logical, and almost alchemical mixture of cucumber, Reposado, agave nectar, lime, and a sprinkling of chile sal, it’s a perfect tipple for San Antonio’s searing heat — not too sweet, not too dry, with the familiar vegetal coolness of cucumber and just a grace note of sun-drenched tang, un besito of salt and heat. Blanca Aldaco’s Cucumber Martini will be the signature bevvie at the River Foundation’s May 30 gala, the River Revel, and Aldaco’s will offer the special Rivertini throughout the summer, in honor of the grand opening of our river’s newly redeveloped Museum Reach. As for the Rivertini’s creator, she gave not one, but two charming acceptance speeches at the Rivertini Pour-Off, and gracefully proclaimed her love for her city and our river. We love you too, man! Hic!
